Washer Toss Distance: How Far Apart Should the Boards Be?

For the Throw Washers one-hole game, place the boards so the front edges are exactly 14 feet apart. That is roughly 13 to 14 normal paces.

Where Do You Measure From?

Measure from the front edge of one board to the front edge of the opposite board. Face the boards directly toward one another and keep that front-edge-to-front-edge distance at 14 feet.

Where Do Players Throw From?

All throws must be made from behind the front edge of the board. The front edge acts as the throwing line.

Setup for 2 Players

Set the two boards exactly 14 feet apart. Both players compete toward the opposite board while staying behind the front edge when they throw.

Setup for 4 Players

Split into two teams. In a 4-player game, teammates stand at opposite boards, facing each other. Keep the boards exactly 14 feet apart, front edge to front edge.

What Size Washers Are Used?

Distance Is Only Part of the Setup

Once the boards are positioned, throwing order matters too. The team that scored last throws first. After each player throws one washer, the player whose washer is furthest from the hole continues throwing until they land one closer than the opponent. If the best washers are equally close, or both miss the board, players alternate throws. Throwing out of turn costs you that toss.
